Home Maintenance Checklist for Autumn

 

It may not be the end of the summer yet, but it’s already starting to feel like fall.

 

It’s never too early to get started on seasonal home maintenance, and we’ve prepared a handy Home Maintenance Checklist for Autumn to help you make the transition to chillier weather.

 

Home Maintenance Checklist for Autumn

Furnace and Heating

  • Have your furnace or heating system serviced by a qualified service company every two years for a gas furnace, and every year for an oil furnace.
  • Open you furnace humidifier damper on units with central air conditioning and clean the humidifier.
  • Lubricate the circulating pump on your hot water heating system.
  • Bleed air from any hot water radiators.
  • Examine the forced air furnace fan belt for wear, looseness or noise; clean fan blades of any dirt buildup (be sure to disconnect the electricity to the motor first).
  • Tun ON your gas furnace pilot light.
  • Check and clean or replace air filters each month during the heating season. Ventilation system, such as heat recovery ventilator, filters should be checked every two months.
  • Vacuum electric baseboard heaters to remove dust.
  • Remove the grilles on forced air systems and vacuum inside the ducts.
  • If your heat recovery ventilator has been shut off for the summer, clean the filters and the core, and pour water down the condensate drain to test it.
  • Cover the outside of air conditioning units.
  • Check chimneys for obstructions such as nests.
  • Clean your portable humidifiers.

Windows and Doors

  • Replace window screens with storm windows.
  • Remove screens from the inside of casement windows to allow air from the heating system to keep condensation off window glass.
  • Ensure windows and skylights close tightly.
  • Ensure that all doors to the outside shut tightly, and check other doors for ease of use. Renew door weatherstripping if required.
  • If there is a door between your house and the garage, ehck the adjustment of the self-closing device to ensure it closes the door completely.

Water Systems

  • Have well water tested for quality. It’s recommended that you test for bacteria every six months.
  • Check your sump pump and line to ensure proper operation, and to ascertain that there are no line obstructions or visible leaks.
  • Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation wall, so that water doesn’t drain into your basement.
  • Clean leaves from your eavestroughs and roof, and test downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof.
  • Drain and store outdoor hoses. Close the valve to the outdoor hose connection and drain the hose bib (exterior faucet), unless your house has frost-proof hose bibs.
  • If you have a septic tank, measure the sludge and scum to determine if the tank needs to be emptied before the spring. Tanks should be pumped out at least once every three years.

Landscaping

  • Put outdoor furniture in storage
  • Winterize flower beds and garden plants
  • Protect young trees and bushes for the winter

 

 


This Letter Made Our Day

We received a wonderful letter from a happy couple who purchased their new home at Clarence Crossing in Rockland. Danielle and Allen recently completed their design choices at our Decor Centre and wrote to tell us how great their experience was. 

 

 

We finalized our kitchen with Deslaurier on Monday and met with your eQ Decor Décor Centre team this morning to pull everything together and do the final check and sign-off on all of our selections. I must tell you that we could not have done any of this without their help, patience and expertise.

Every time we met or corresponded somehow with the eQ Décor Centre staff, they made us feel like we were their only customers. I’m not sure how they pulled that off because we know that they have hundreds of files to work on at once, but they made us feel very special as I’m sure they did for all the other eQ Homes buyers. They knew early on what our tastes were and made selecting everything such a charm. We always received a warm welcome whether we were seeing them on a scheduled appointment or dropping in on one of those crazy chaotic “open house” Saturdays, when they always took the time to reach out to everyone as much as they could.

From the beginning, dealing with the eQ Sales Team at Clarence Crossing, to dealing with Deslaurier, and finally, today, with your eQ Décor Centre team, it’s been an amazing experience! My husband and I walked away from our Décor meeting today feeling so excited and confident in the choices we couldn’t have made without them. Thanks to them, we have no second thoughts and are so excited to see it all come together. You have an amazing team and we are so grateful to have met them. They now feel more like friends than business acquaintances. As we have just retired, this will be our final forever home and we are so pleased with how everything has come together. We can’t wait to share pictures, after the move, to show them the beautiful results of their hard work.

CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence

Finalists Announced!

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2017 National Awards for Housing Excellence.

“These awards are about excellence and recognizing the very best in Canadian new homes, home renovations, community development and marketing across Canada,” said CHBA Chief Executive Officer Kevin Lee.
Thirty-nine CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence will be presented at the Association’s 74th National Conference on May 12th in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador.
CHBA members responded enthusiastically to the national awards program with a record number of entries in 2017. Over 70 judges were engaged in the process over the course of several weeks to review the entries to select the finalists. Then the winners were selected by a national panel of judges who met in Ottawa over the course of three days to review the finalists’ entries. “When you are judging the best in Canadian new homes, there is no doubt that as a judge you have your work cut out for you. With so many exciting and innovative projects to choose from it was a challenging task, and it took a practical army of judges from coast to coast to do it justice! The process also makes it a huge honour to win, so there will be great anticipation and excitement when the winners are announced in May,” said Lee.
CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence will be presented for projects of varying sizes in the following categories:

• New Home Awards (15 in total),
• Home Renovation Awards (10 in total),
• Marketing Awards (10 in total)
• Community Development Award (1 award)
• Net Zero Home Award (1 award)

The new Net Zero Home Award is being introduced this year to recognize a high energy efficient home under the Association’s net zero labelling program.

Two major national awards, one for Marketing Excellence and one for Design Excellence, will also be presented to the home builder who has achieved the highest level of success in the marketing and new homes categories respectively.

We’re proud to announce that eQ Homes has been recognized with three wins at the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association’s 33rd Annual Housing Design Awards.
